Summermeeting 2009 on Networking

After the bus-tour from Lund, check-in at Tyringe Kurhotel and coffee, we started the meeting with a workshop on networking with Olivia Fox Cabane, a networkingexpert from New York. Initially she taught us all there is to know about how to make a wonderful first impression. Then she talked about networking at scientific conferences and finally some general points about networking in science and Olivia answered questions that came up during the session.

After lunch and Olivia’s third session, Niklas Wahlberg from University of Turku, Finland talked about “Resolving the reign of chaos: using genomic information to unravel the evolutionary history of a species-rich group of insects”.

The later part of the afternoon was spent on posters. At Genecos Summermeetings, poster-presentations are mandatory for PhD-students. The presentations are held in small groups in front of the poster, where the PhD-student give a presentation for a few minutes and it also enables for some discussion.

Some exercise before dinner is good for both body and brain. Hence we repeated the successful event from last year: Swedish softball between supervisors and students.

The second day started with early breakfast followed by more posterpresentations. After that, Mentor program II started for some of the student. The rest of us could drink coffee and listen to Jure Piskur, member of Geneco steering committee and professor at COB, Lund University, who talked about “Birth and death of yeast chromosomes”.
