Innovations, patents, spin-off companies, negotiations, academia-industry interface

WEEK 20 of 2010 (Preiliminary dates, start on Monday, 17 th May at 10 a.m., Genetics House), dead-line for registration: 1st May, fee: 2.500 SEK, 3 points (No costs for geneco-students!)

FOCUS:

What is an innovation within molecular bio-sciences, how can we protect and commercialize it? What is a patent? How to approach an investor or a large company to get support for innovations and research ideas? What are a biotech spin-off and the financial valley of death? Does my project contain results which are worth patenting and can be “offered/sold” to an industry partner?

Day 1:

10.15 am – 4 pm, GA,
Crash course on intellectual property rights: how and what to protect of biotech innovations. Lectures and exercises, Pernille Winding Gojkovic & Peter Holm (Patent Office Hoeiberg A/S, Copenhagen), am and pm (5 X 45’)

Day 2:

10.15 am – noon, GA,
From academic research to patents and spin-off companies: case story on deoxyribonucleoside kinases, Birgitte Munch-Petersen (2 X 45’),
1.15 - 3 pm: ZGene: a spin-off company, Zoran Gojkovic (2 X 45’), enzyme technology in synthesis of anti-cancer drugs, homework: read the corresponding patents

Day 3:

10.15 am - 4 pm, LH,
Bridge between industry and academia, negotiations, license agreements, practical exercises, Niels E. Nielsen (Copenhagen University, Denmark) (5 X 45’)

Day 4:

9 – 10 am:
Visit to IDEON Science Park, Nils Alwalls conference room in GAMMA, Sölvegatan 41, on LU campus, Hans Möller (1 X 45’)
at 1 pm, GA:
Academia-Industry Interface (financial aspect, start-ups etc.)
1 – 1.45 pm:
Financing possibilities for inventors Helena Ljusberg (helena.ljusberg@luinnovation.lu.se, LU Innovation) – Bridging the financial “valley of death” I, and Anna Christerson (anna.christerson@teknopol.se, Teknopol AB) – Bridging the financial “valley of death” II
2 – 3.30 pm:
Start-up, spin-off companies and incubators Christine Widstrand (Christine.Widstrand@luab.lu.se , LUAB) - Start-up companies from Lund University and Evy Lundgren-Åkerlund (evy@lundbioinkubator.se, Lund Bioincubator) Stimulation of entrepreneurship, and Lennart Gisselsson (lennart.gisselsson@phiab.se, Phase Holographic Imaging AB) Pros and Cons of Working for Start-Ups.

Day 5:

11.15am – noon, GA,
GMO problematic (Anna Tunlid, 1 X 45’),
1.15 – 3 pm: analysis of the Tuesday patents, conclusions, mini-test and presentation of Ph.D. student projects (with emphasis on innovations), JP (2 X 45’). Course evaluation.
