PhD-Student of the Month
Neus Latorre-Margalef

My name is Neus Latorre-Margalef and I am a PhD-student in Björn Olsens and Jonas Waldenströms group in the Section for Zoonotic Ecology and Epidemiology, University of Kalmar.

My research focuses on influenza A virus (bird influenza) in wild birds. I am especially interested in how mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) populations serve as a reservoir for this virus in nature, and the diversity of viruses present in those duck populations. Other species of birds, such as waders and shorebirds, are also infected with influenza and I am trying to determine their precise role in the perpetuation of the influenza A virus. My research deals both with host ecology issues, such as the effects of being infected, and issues of the virus itself, such as molecular evolution.

Our university is located in the southern part of Sweden, along one of the main bird flyways of northern Europe. Most material for my research comes from migrating ducks stopping over at nearby Ottenby Bird Observatory. Our proximity to, and association with this premier research facility makes our work with birds even more fascinating.

Since I started working with the group, the interest in avian influenza has been continually increasing. I find it very stimulating to do research on a subject that both involves wildlife and has an importance for the poultry industry and public health
