Anställningsform: Tidsbegränsad anställning, 4 år
Omfattning: 100 %
Placering: Fysiska institutionen (LTH), Lund

Diarienummer: LTHPA 2013/263

The research at the division of Solid State Physics is focused around different aspects of semiconductor physics, ranging from materials science to quantum physics, to different applications. The division leads the major interdisciplinary research environment within nanoscience and nanotechnology at Lund University – the Nanometer Structure Consortium at Lund University (nmC@LU). Lund Nano Lab is a central key facility for fabrication of material and devices on the nanoscale. The division is also heavily involved in the undergraduate education, especially within the “Engineering Nanoscience” program.

Since about ten years, our research within the area of one-dimensional semiconductor structures, so called nanowires, has been at the international forefront. So far, our three main areas have been: epitaxial growth of nanowires, fundamental properties studied with transport physics and optical physics, and more applied nanoelectronics.

This PhD research programme will be carried out within the context of the NanoEmbrace network, a Marie Curie Actions – Initial Training Network (ITN) – project funded by the European Commission, under the Framework programme 7 (FP7). Through the project activities, the PhD students will have the opportunity to come in contact and collaborate with several of the leading European research groups.

Arbetsuppgifter

Within this project, experimental studies and modeling leading to increased understanding of fabrication of nanostructures, will be conducted. An exciting possibility with nanotechnology is that it enables fabrication of materials with properties not easily obtained in bulk. Polytypism, which is the ability for a material to exhibit different crystal structures that only differ in their stacking sequences, is an example of such a property. Nanowires fabricated of III–V semiconductor materials often exhibit other polytypes than zinc blende, which is the one stable in bulk.

The ultimate goal of this project is to understand the formation of polytypes with hexagonal character in III–V semiconductor nanowires to such a degree that the 2H (wurtzite structure), 4H, and even the 6H polytypes can be reproducibly synthesized. The PhD student is expected to develop methods to fabricate nanowires with controlled polytypes. The PhD student will grow the nanowires using metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy and use high resolution transmission electron microscopy to characterize the crystal structure.

In order to gain deeper understanding of the polytypism, different III–V materials will systematically be tested together with different seed particle metals, fabricated by our aerosol techniques. Theoretical modeling based on nucleation theory will accompany the experiments. Ultimately, nanowires with controlled polytypes could be used to fabricate better controlled heterostructure nanowires for electronic and optoelectronic device applications.

The PhD student will work independently, but in close collaboration with other research groups at the department and within the nmC@LU. Collaboration with other partners belonging to the NanoEmbrace network is also expected as well as a research visit at another partner. The PhD studies contain a course part and a scientific project. Teaching on undergraduate level might also be a part of the job.

Behörighet

A formal requirement for doctoral studies in physics is an advanced university degree within a related field, such as a Master's degree in physics or nanotechnology or equivalent, or substantial advanced course work at the master level or comparable, including an independent research project.

The applicants must meet all the criteria listed below:
1. Be, at the time of recruitment, in the first two years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged. In any case, the applicant’s research experience must not exceed 5 years full time at the end of the first 3 years working on the project.
2. At the time of recruitment, must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account.
3. At the starting time of the positions, the candidates must have completed the courses that would have allowed them to enroll in a doctorate program either in the country where they are studying or in Sweden.

Bedömningsgrund

Selection to postgraduate studies is based on the expected ability to perform well in the studies. The evaluation of the ability to perform well is based primarily on the results of studies at the basic and advanced levels, in particular:
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to postgraduate studies within this area, such as a broad and thorough preparation in physics. This can be documented by appended documents.
2. Estimated ability to work independently and the ability to formulate and solve scientific questions. This ability can be established, for example, based on undergraduate research experiences, a master’s thesis or in a discussion of scientific problems during a possible interview.
3. Skills in written and oral communication.
4. Other experience relevant to postgraduate studies, such as professional experience.

Desirable Qualifications:
We expect that your undergraduate studies include a broad range of courses, in subjects such as solid state physics, materials science, nanotechnology, and materials characterization techniques. The research is to a large extent interdisciplinary, and a broad competence profile and experiences from relevant areas of physics, materials science, and nanoscience are of special value.

The demonstrated ability for skillful laboratory work is essential, and experience in fabrication or characterization of nanoscale structures is highly valued.

Important personal qualities are, beside creativity and a curious mind, the ability to work both independently and in a group and experience in the scientific interaction with researchers from other disciplines and in other countries.

Your application should include one or more documents demonstrating your qualifications, for example the abstract to your Master thesis, project report, manuscript or similar. Good knowledge in spoken and written English is essential.
