Biotechnology is a globally expanding area with respect to both research and production, and Lund University is among the leading universities in the world with several renowned scientists. A number of biotech companies are operating in Lund. Biotechnology has an impact on issues like health and pharmaceuticals, food production, waste water treatment and other environmental issues, as well as the production of chemicals.
The Master s in Biotechnology is a broad programme covering different aspects of the conversion of raw materials to products using biocatalysts, e.g. enzymes and microorganisms. Both the development of the biocatalyst and the process are covered. The role of biotechnology in a sustainable society is also discussed. The programme is aimed at those with an interest in the possibilities of using biological systems for production. You will learn about topics including gene technology, bioprocess technology, immunotechnology, bioseparation, enzyme technology, protein engineering, metabolic engineering and process and plant design.
After completing this programme you will:
- have achieved a high level of general skill in biotechnology to meet challenges in the field
- have improved your communication skills during discussions and by practising written and oral presentations of small projects
- be able to suggest processing conditions for the industrial manufacturing of biotech products with regard to raw materials, convenience, energy and sustainability
- have learnt the importance of entrepreneurship
Career prospects
The programme is closely aligned to market needs and there is an emphasis on engineering aspects. During your studies you will meet not only researchers at the departments but also lecturers from biotech companies working with, for example, product development and marketing. Your future job could be anywhere in the world, with a small or large multinational company, a government authority, a university or another organisation. You will also be eligible to go on to doctoral studies.
