To study as an exchange student in Sweden, you may need a residence permit or visa for the period that you will study, depending on which country you are a citizen in.
EU: European Union
EEA: European Economic Area: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein
As an exchange student from an EU/EEA country you do not need a residence permit to come to Sweden. However, if you are staying for studies for more than 3 months you must register with the Swedish Migration Board no later than three months after your arrival to the country.

Exchange students coming to Sweden from a non-EU/EEA country will need a residence permit or visa, to enter Sweden, depending on which country you are a citizen in.
Exchange students are advised to apply for residence permit or visa at the Swedish Embassy or Consulate in your home country, after you have received a Letter of Acceptance for exchange studies and in good time before arrival to Sweden.
