Information flows and time constraints have put a huge pressure on students at higher education today. First-year undergraduate students have often difficulties when it comes to dealing with the abundance of information they are introduced to during their education. They therefore need guidelines in information skills in terms of being able to organize data, evaluating sources, taking strategy to search web sites, reflecting, interpreting and graphically illustrate the collected data.
In this paper we have examined how the faculty teachers, IT professionals and Librarians cooperate to achieve these targets during the first semester year’s course named GEOA01. To get a better knowledge of their cooperate in relation to the first semester courses we have interviewed four people from Division of Geology, Institute of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, Lund University.
In a holistic perspective – looking at the entire bachelor program - the contribution by and incorporation of literacy resources are thoughtfully integrated into educational program. Our case study shows that these attributes, IT and library, are integral to improve students skills but are not embedded in to their schedule. Although each of interviewees has a cut clear definition of their own roles in relation to students they have minimal information about the role of one another. They don’t actually know to what extent they can rely on the library staff to ask for help.
Finally, this study suggests that the available IT- resource and competence ought to be utilized in a better way, and this requires a conceptual review. Concerning the improvement of the students writing skills during the course, the teachers should relate the existing literacy resources at the Institute library to students’ needs.
