More often than not, Christian Zionism is analyzed through the hermeneutical lens of dispensationalism. From this perspective, Christian Zionism is understood as characterized by this specific view of history and individual believers as motivated by this worldview in their political, economic and moral support of the state of Israel. Other aspects of Christian Zionist belief and practice have been left largely unexplored. In the present paper I adopt a perspective on Christian Zionism as a global religious movement in its own right. This implies a view of Christian Zionism as a religious and cultural milieu with shared – but contested – values, agendas for social and political activism and plenty of possibilities for individual identity construction. The paper is based on life story data of Jacob, a Swedish Christian Pentecostal who decided to join the Israeli Defense Forces out of his conviction that God wanted him to protect the Jewish people. In his life narrative, love of the people and the land rather than end-times theology is the primary discursive tool that is employed to make sense of his life journey. The analysis of this material is performed in three steps: (i)Firstly, I analyze the formal aspects of the narrative taken as a whole emphasizing the pattern of calling – test of faith – confirmation.(ii)Secondly, I analyze the theme of love as a discursive tool to explain the protagonist’s motivation.(iii)And finally, I relate Jacob’s narrative identity thematically to the grand narrative of Christian Zionism.
