Title: Food on medieval and early modern castles
The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the food that was eaten on Scandinavian castles from the late Middle ages and the early modern period. This is done from a power perspective, to see if the nobility that lived on the castles used food to manifest their power. What kind of food did the nobility eat to differ from common people? The way the food got to the castles is also discussed. What kind of food was brought in as tax, what was bought and what was produced on the castle? Both written sources and bone remains from slaughtered animals found on castles are used to answer these questions. The author finds that people ate lots of different food during the Middle ages. Most food was based on grain, but meat and fish was also very important. The nobility controlled almost all food production and used that to make sure that certain kinds of food, such as game, stayed off common peoples dinner tables.
