Benchmarking integrated control strategies using an extended BSM2 platform

Författare

Summary, in English

The need for integrated management of urban wastewater systems (UWS) is highly acknowledged in both research and industry. Modelling studies and practical experiences with integrated control of UWS clearly suggest the benefits of a holistic control approach. Given the success of benchmark simulation models (BSMs) in the study of control strategy options for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), a spatial extension of the BSM2 model to include sewer and catchment descriptions is presented in this paper. The extension includes detailed model descriptions for wastewater generation (flow rate/pollution) in a hypothetical
catchment and its transport through a sewer network. The extension can be linked directly to the existing BSM2 model. Possibilities for the control of loads and flow rate exist in the form of storage tanks with pumps/valves as actuators. As an example, an integrated control scheme of the extended system is presented. The study demonstrates the potential (beneficial) effects that integrated control might have on the UWS by balancing the sewer overflows and/or WWTP overloading.
