Summary, in English

Digitalization is considered as an important strategy to meet the challenges facing healthcare sector. However, the results often fall below expectations. Furthermore, the literature has provided a fragmented understanding as previous studies have generally focused on the advantages and the barriers of the adoption of health care IS. Very little attention has been paid to the generative mechanisms of digitalization i.e. the causal powers that contribute to changes in organization. Given this background, the purpose of this paper is to identify generative mechanisms of digitalization and explain the outcomes. To address these questions a realist social theory underpinned by critical realist lens is applied. As research strategy, case study research was employed and interviews and observation studies were used as data collection techniques. Causal and comparative analyses are employed in order to identify the generative mechanisms of digitalization. This paper adds to digitalization of healthcare literature by focusing on issues that are of primary concern to managers responsible for the introduction of digital technology. It also demonstrate the usefulness of critical realism, for developing substantive contribution in IS research field, and provides an illustration of the morphogenetic approach, to study and explain the relationship between digital materiality and organizations.
