Sammanfattning
This paper looks at process control in the pulp and paper industry from the perspective of pioneering work carried out in the early 1960s. One of the aims of the Billerud-IBM Project was to explore the technical and economical advantages that could be obtained by using a digital computer for control and supervision of a paper machine. The study also explored the features of a digital computer that were useful for control of industrial processes. Details on the work on modelling are presented. The author of this paper also gives some personal reflections on: drastic changes in the industry; system deficiencies; process control technology; user's views; autonomous control; supply of competent personnel and codesign of processes and controllers
