Heat losses from a novel type of district heating culvert

Summary, in English

In this paper the heat losses from a novel type of district heating culvert, termed Elgotherm, is investigated and compared to conventional culvert. The insulation material is made of expanded polystyrene and the culvert consists Of four cross-linked polyethylene pipes. The heat losses are calculated using both a time dependent and a stationary finite element model. Measured data from an existing system is used as input to the models. According to a conservative comparison between the calculated heat losses from the Elgotherm Culvert and a conventional culvert the heat loss from the latter is about twice as large. Due to the very small temperature drops in the radiator pipes it was not possible to verify the calculated heat loss with measurements for these pipes (although the small temperature drops indicate a low heat loss). In the case with the domestic hot water pipe the measured and calculated heat loss show good agreement.
