Summary, in English
Designing multimodal interfaces is a complex process. One of the steps is to decide what kind of information should be presented for the adressee and in what medium the message should be conveyed. The starting point in this paper is information mapping and modality theory. The paper discusses the strenghts and the weaknesses of language and pictorial representations as presented in Bernsen (1994). It focusses on the interplay of linguistic and pictorial representations (Mullet & Sano 1995) and the role of context. Similar to Gardenfors (1995) I maintain that interpretation of multimodal representations is an active process where the user creates meaning with the help of her previous experience and knowledge.
