Författare
Summary, in English
The Finno-Swedish language has been an official language in Finland since 1919. Despite this, the continuing status of Finno-Swedish has in become a subject for discussion among Finnish politicians in recent years. The present thesis analyses the language politics of two Finnish parties, namely Blue Reform (a right-wing party) and the Swedish People’s Party (a social liberal party), a year before the Finnish election in 2019. This is done through a comparative idea-analysis. The theoretical framework consists of Barry Buzan’s theory of the idea of the state together with relevant ideological perspectives, explanatory of the parties’ statements presented in chosen news articles and in either parties’ manifesto. The analysis addresses both parties’ approaches to the Finno-Swedish as related to three main areas of the Finnish state: the idea of the language and identity in the Finnish state, the idea of language in Finnish institutions and the idea of language in Finnish schools.
