The Visuality of Traditional Textile

Författare

  • Johanna Rosenqvist

Summary, in English

In the course of writing my thesis I have spent considerable time of my research in the archives of local handicraft associations. Working parallel to a research-environment that predominantly has been using methods of Material Culture (Henry Glassie, 1999) I have myself occasionally tried to add the thought of seeing traditional textile as an important visual culture.

The treatment of different kinds of visual media in the archives (such as sketches, textiles, photographs etc) has provoked an interest in how to read “textile as text”, how and if it may be, in a way “short circuited” by the visual culture approach.

Focusing on “the visuality” is important not only because of the fact that there are objects hidden away in the textile archives that require attention of a competent reader of their visual signs, but also because there are several contemporary artists, working with textile, posing important questions about how gender and genre are produced and reproduced.

During the workshop, pictures and pictorial analysis will be part of the presentation. I will provide an integrated gender- and genre perspective when looking at the entangled notions of femininity and the particular aspects of the textile visual culture I have hitherto examined.
