Social Militarisation and the Power of History. A Study of Scholarly Perspectives

Författare

Summary, in English

In this book, three historical macro-regions are analysed: East Asia, Southeast Asia and Mesoamerica. By comparing three very different historiographical patterns from the specific point of view of social militarisation, we gain an outsider's perspective that proves to be very illuminating. Due to structural features of the various scholarly arenas the three regions turn out very differently. Some cultures are condemned as warlike, while others are described in terms of the pursuit of peaceful cultural and religious goals.

Furthermore, the reader is presented with a synthesis of the history of early medieval Europe for the point of view of militarisation. This is an attempt to demonstrate the ease with which historians may change our perceptions of the past. History as we know it never existed: it is merely a construction conjured up by present-day writers.

The book has newly produced maps and an ample bibliography
