Summary, in English

This volume is the result of a conference on population and development held in Båstad, 17 - 18 April 1991. with the participation of social scientists, health specialists and development administrators from the Scandinavian countries.

The contributions to the conference cover a wide range of issues. Starting with a critical assessment of conventional thinking on demographic prospects, the volume covers a comprehensive disccussion of the "demographic trap" perspective, which has recently attracted much attention in the development debate.

A number of case studies of social and demographic change are presented and discussed. Additional contributions cover changing World Bank views on poverty and population, as well as current positions of Sida and SAREC on population issues in development cooperation.
