I am part of a larger project called "More biodiversity at less cost" which is based on the fact that certain types of small habitats are under agri-environmental schemes and a lot of money is given as support to promote farmers to manage them. This is done partly to preserve historical and cultural values but also to increase biodiversity in the agricultural landscape. But, It has not been evaluated whether these habitats and the management of them actually benefits biodiversity and ecosystem services. Is the current support system cost effective compared to the benefits in biodiversity and ecosystem services they provide?

I focus on how small landscape fragments and the management of these affect the biodiversity and ecosystem service of pollinating insects and insects that are natural enemies to crop pests. I work mainly with pollinators since many wildflowers and a large proportion of cultivated crops depend on insect pollinators for reproduction and seed-set. Many species in this group are also threatened and of conservation concern. Predatory insects are of interest since they help keep the populations of pest species down and is therefore an important group of insects that alongside pollination can be of economical importance to farmers.

In this project I get to combine the areas of biology that I find most interesting: conservation biology, landscape ecology and wildlife management.
