Olle Lind

I grew up on the countryside outside Uppsala, Sweden. Our house was one of three in a very small village just at the rim of an endless forest. I learned about biology in early years from my father that took me for walks through the forest while talking enthusiastically about plants and animals. He did a good job, I have been amazed and inspired by Nature ever since. I am fortunate to work in such an interesting field as sensory biology. Animals’ perception of the World - mediated by any sense – varies between species, which I find immensely thrilling and a challenge for abstract thinking.

As a PhD candidate in Lund Vision Group, I studied bird vision in bright and dim light. My research was mostly concerned with the capacity of spatial vision and colour vision in two species of parrot, budgerigars and Bourke’s parrots. I finished my doctoral thesis in April 2011. As a post-doc with Almut Kelber, I continue my studies on bird vision, now focusing more on the mechanisms of colour vision. My aim is to clarify the relationships and connections in-between different types of bird photoreceptor and their roles within the visual system.

My methods include behavioural tests, visual modelling, morphological techniques, microscopy studies etc. Hopefully, my research will contribute to a deeper understanding of how colour vision has developed in birds and how it functions, both at the mechanistic level and in a broader ecological context.
