The 10 most common questions at the LUFF office:

1. Where and how do I find accommodation in or around Lund?
The accommodation which LUFF provided previously has been transferred to LU Service within the University. Visiting researchers/staff should always request for assistance in finding accommodation at their department. The department can then contact LU Service.
Furnished accommodation can also be sought by contacting "LOCUS VISIT", via your host department, which has access to this database of accommodation administered by the university for guest researchers. Other alternatives are to put an advertisement into the local newspaper Sydsvenska Dagbladet, preferably on the weekend, or to put a notice on the notice board of a supermarket in the area that interests you. If you plan a long stay in Lund, then LKF (Lunds Kommuns Fastighets AB = The Lund City Council Housing Office) can sometimes offer unfurnished flats for rent, tel 35 85 85. See the pink pages of the telephone directory under LKF for the office hours.

2. Where and how do I find daycare or preschool for my child?
Children of parents who are working or studying can apply for municipal day-care at a crèche (Daghem) or with a child minder (Dagmamma). A fee is charged for this service, which is approximately 900:- per month
For staff at the Lund Hospital, the play school "Röda Stugan" is available, costing about 1300:-. It is open also on Saturdays, at Sölvegatan 17, tel 355678.
In the year of their sixth birthday all children in Sweden have the right to go to pre-school.

If you are not working or studying, the options available include:
Play schools and Pre-schools (Öppen Förskola)
Öppna förskolor are for young children accompanied by a parent or child minder. These Mothers´and Toddlers´ Groups are often run by the local churches.
Pre-schools are listed in the telephone directory under: Social Service, Barnstugor in the green section and under Öppna Förskolor
Montessori and other types of Play Schools
These are also listed in the pink pages of the telephone directory under M as well as in the yellow pages.

3. Are there any English speaking schools for my children in and around Lund?
Schooling is compulsory between the ages of 7 and 16. In this 9-year period, at normal state schools, all teaching materials are provided free of charge and routine medical checks are carried out free of charge by a school doctor and nurse.
All foreign children receive instruction in Swedish in special classes until their proficiency in Swedish enables them to participate in the normal Swedish school system. (This takes about 4 to 6 months). In addition, the school will arrange some ongoing tuition in the child's native language and culture (Modersmål). At the moment tuition in at least 20 of the world's major languages is offered. The classes are usually small and of mixed ability. It is, however, felt that it is important for children to continue to study their native language.

To register your child for school, please contact the invandrarundervisning (Swedish for Foreign children) at the Municipal Education Office:

5. How do I go about getting a personal I.D. (personnummer)?
Application for this is made at the Tax Department. The documents needed are: a letter from your employer stating that you are here at least for one year, passport, residence permit, work permit where applicable and the form provided at the Tax Department, "Application for a Swedish Personal Number". This application takes about 3 weeks to service.
The personal number consists of 10 numbers birth date and four check digits. This is important in Sweden as it is used for all official transactions, such as opening a bank account, the health system, car registration etc.

6. What is the regular procedure in getting a bank account?
As you may need to open a bank account before you have received your Personnummer, most banks issue an interim number (which they need to enable their computers to handle your account).
- Handelsbanken does this without any further requirements.
- Skandinaviska-Enskilda Banken (S-E-Banken) and
- the Savings Bank (Sparbanken Finn) have a special form to fill in, which must also be signed by the university department or the firm for which you are working.
As soon as you have received your Personnummer from the Tax Department, notify your bank of your "real" Personnummer, and you will be able to apply for a cash card to enable you to make withdrawals from the "Bankomat" or "Minuten" automatic teller machines all over Sweden.
N.B. If you receive your wage from the university, an account will be opened in your name automatically at the Nordbanken, into which your pay is paid around the 24th of the month. If you have an account in another bank, please remember to give Nordbanken (Stora Södergatan 2) a standing order to transfer your wage to the desired account. This is then done automatically.
