Art as a societal force. Understanding and addressing the plastic crisis through photography and visual representation
In photography and visual representations, plastics is often portrayed as an issue of pollution and wastefulness that destroys and litters our environment.
But less attention is given to for example plastic’s dependence on fossil fuels, relation to climate change, and potential toxicity. Why is this the case, and what does it say about how we as a society view the plastic challenge? In turn, how can the artistic community help engage the public around the issues of plastics? Join us in a discussion about the force of art, and the need to highlight more aspects of plastics as a way forward to create a more sustainable plastics system.
Presenters: Moa Petersén (Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences), Ekaterina Chertkovskaya (Environmental and Energy Systems Studies), and Karl Holmberg (Department of Political Science).
The talk is organised by the research project STEPS: Sustainable Plastics and Transition Pathways, and is part of Lund University’s Future Week, which runs from 12-18 October. The ambition of Future Week is to highlight the latest and most timely research from Lund University. The week is targeted at members of the public, students, industry, societal organisaions, and authorities who are interested in the most important future issues of our time.
