Biomimetics and bioinspiration – what have we learnt from nature?
One might argue that ever since humans started to make constructions and designs, the primary source of inspiration must have been nature. Throughout the history of mankind, we have constantly been copying solutions we find in nature, that have a function that we see would benefit ourselves, with the ambition to achieve a controllable similar function in our artificial construction. So there is a vast historical perspective in this subject, but in this lecture I will focus on rather contemporary examples of biomimetics and bioinspiration. My lecture will be based on a collection of interesting examples within selected areas of applications in our society. I think you will see that our habit of turning to nature for inspiration is still in our present time very much alive and nature is still one of our main sources of inspiration!
