Dunja Mijatović, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, to deliver Anna Lindh Lecture in Lund

Listen to her speech “The state of human rights in Europe: forward and back?”

Dunja Mijatović, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, has been named the 2020 annual Anna Lindh speaker. On 20 January, she will present “The state of human rights in Europe: forward and back?”

During her coming speech, Ms. Mijatovic will address the rise of intolerance in Europe. In particular, she will talk about the lack of responsibility among politicians, spreading hate through speeches and amplifying prejudice against marginalized and vulnerable people.

In this context, she will also talk about her work on migrants and asylum seekers.

Dunja Mijatović has regularly given lectures in national and international fora and has been awarded several human rights prizes. She has also been active in supporting NGO activities in the field of human rights education and asylum.

A national of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dunja Mijatović was elected Commissioner for Human Rights by the Parliamentary Assembly and took up her position in 2018. She has been working to promote and protect human rights for the past two decades, acquiring extensive knowledge in the field of international monitoring, in particular as regards freedom of expression.

The Anna Lindh Lecture
The Anna Lindh Lecture pays homage to the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, who was assassinated in 2003. Since 2005, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, Lund University, in cooperation with the Anna Lindh Memorial Fund and Lund University’s Association of Foreign Affairs, have hosted the annual event. The lecture highlights human rights matters with a speech from a distinguished scholar, politician, diplomat or international top-level civil servant.
