The world is in flux, and despite its status as the world’s foremost military power, US foreign policy under Donald Trump appears increasingly erratic and its global influence is on the wane. Meanwhile, in East Asia, China’s quest for regional and global influence continues, Japan’s security reforms move the country further away from the spirit of its pacifist constitution, and events on the Korean peninsula dominate global headlines. As the world’s foremot military power, the US plays a key role in the region.

UPF, in association with the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies at Lund University, invites you to an evening of discussion and debate with the aim of going beyond the headlines, to deepen our collective understanding of East Asia and problematise some of our common misconceptions.

The panel will consist of:

Misato Matsuoka, who is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at Tokai University (Japan) as well as several other Japanese universities. She also works for New Diplomacy Initiative (ND), a think tank based in Tokyo that specializes in issues such as US-Japan diplomacy.

Ra Mason is a Sasakawa Lecturer in International Relations and Japanese Foreign Policy at the University of East Anglia. Ra has authored or co-authored a number of books and articles on Japan’s foreign policy and regional security, and is a regular commentator on international media.

Dr. Elina Sinkkonen is a Senior Research Fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. Her research interests include Chinese nationalism and national identity, regional security issues in East Asia, authoritarian regimes, gender equality and public opinion issues in China.

The panel will be moderated by Paul O’Shea Associate Senior Lecturer at the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies.
