Film screening: A Young Patriot
A Young Patriot explores the passionate patriotism of some Chinese youths born after 1990. It documents five years in the life of Zhao Chantong, who is sitting for the university exam when the films begins. Du Haibin has gained intimate access to Zhao, his friends, and his family, and over the years followed Zhao from his hometown Pingyao in Shanxi province to his university life in Chengdu. Through Zhao we bear witness to China's complex history and development and its impact on one young man.
Du Haibin studied at the Beijing Film Academy and has made several documentary films including Umbrella (2007) and 1428 (2009) on the Sichuan Earthquake, which won the Orizzonti Prize for Best Documentary at Venice. His latest film A Young Patriot (2015) has been screened at several film festivals, including the Toronto Film Festival and the Copenhagen documentary film festival, and will be screened at the Tempo documentary festival in Stockholm in March.
