Food Futures 2: The Protein Shifts

Swedes eat a lot of meat, both in international comparison - above the EU average - and clearly more than the National Food Administration's dietary advice. However, in 2017 Sweden passed "peak meat", and for the first time since the 1960s, meat consumption decreased.

In recent years, more and more research has emphasized the unsustainability of today's animal protein consumption, both for the climate, humans and other animals. But how can a shift to more plant-based proteins look? What are the proteins of the future and for whom will they be available? And what are the social, cultural and technological challenges to shifting the proteins we consume?

Karolina Östbring and Tobias Linné are both members of the interdisciplinary research theme The Protein Shifts at the Pufendorf Institute at Lund University.
