Beskrivning
The Sociology of Human Development
NEW COURSE!
Course name: SOCB33, Sociology: The Sociology of Human Development (Swedish name: Sociologi: Global utvecklingssociologi). First Cycle Theme-course. 15 credits. Autumn semester. Language of instruction: English. Offered as a stand-alone course and an elective course within the Bachelor of Science Programme in Development Studies (SGUTV).
This course offers a sociological view of economic, social, and political processes, with a special focus on global social change and development. It aims to give you the knowledge needed to understand and critically analyse discussions about global social change, focusing especially on the post-war period. The teaching consists of lectures, exercises, group assignments and seminars.
Module 1: Classical and Modern Social Analysis
In this module, you will explore both classical and modern sociological theories. You will examine the economic, social, and political transformations central to classical sociology. Key topics include the rise of nation-states, capitalism, bureaucracies, rationalisation, and the increasing division of labour within and between countries. You will also cover foundational scientific theories developed in classical sociology that continue to influence the social sciences today.
Module 2: Contemporary Sociological Perspectives on Global Development
In this module, you will address current development challenges around the world, using both macro (large scale) and micro (small scale) perspectives. Your focus will be on how societies are structured and how they evolve, considering institutions, structures, and social networks, and their complex interactions. You will use sociological theories and concepts to shed light on how inequality is created and sustained. The module ends with an evaluation of various social policy interventions through the lens of the theories we have discussed in the course.
Please note: This is a stand-alone theme course in English. The Department of Sociology’s theme-courses should be taken as a supplement to other courses. These courses can typically be taken without prior university qualifications. However, please note that they generally do not provide eligibility for further studies.
