Niña mala, mujer terrible - La protagonista de Travesuras de la niña mala de Mario Vargas Llosa y los valores del marianismo

Författare

  • Emma Nilsson

Summary, in English

The following study investigates the female main character in the novel The Bad Girl (2006), written by the Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa. In addition, it examines how she relates to the Marianismo, the Latin-American ideology that proposes that the woman's spiritual and moral capacity is superior to the man's, and favours the woman's sexual passivity and purity. The essay is based on the observation of the female character's untraditional behaviour, and its purpose is to analyze the characteristics of the bad girl and to elucidate these in relation to the theory of the Marianismo. In the analysis, a comparison between the characteristics of the bad girl and the values of the Marianismo is made, discussing how this relation may affect the interpretation of the novel. The study deducts that the bad girl does not follow the patterns of the Marianismo, mainly due to her sexuality and her seduction of many men, and also concludes that with the support of this comparison, it is possible to interpret the novel in a feministic way.
