Den kulturella vändningens provokationer

Summary, in English
This article is a reflection on the changing landscape of academic history in recent decades and it captures shifts in this landscape. The points made are several. Firstly, postmodernism - or rather the linguistic and cultural turn - does not represent a break with the traditional paradigm of history, although it has challenged and annoyed several historians. Neither is it a temporary fashion. Instead it is emphasised here that it has to be accepted as part of a long-term trend. Central elements in the present post-modern approach, such as constructivism and narratives we live by, can be traced back to traditional source criticism. The historian's craft over the last decades has been transformed and new positions in the current debate about the status of historical knowledge have developed. Today, there is a broader acceptance of the complexity of concepts such as truth and objectivity. Secondly, the linguistic and cultural turn has successfully improved theoretical frameworks and made historical research more relevant in a social and public context. It has opened up the field for new directions and for a wide range of innovative areas for historical and interdisciplinary research.
