The aim of this study is to examine the discourses on climate change in relation to certain European heat waves in Swedish print media, with the help of Anabela Carvalho’s discourse analysis, specifically formulated for media. To what extent did the media link the extreme weather events to climate change, and man-made emissions? This study also examines the role of actors and discursive strategies in shaping the media discourse regarding the subject, how the focus shifts from history-, to future-, to present orientated, and to which extent political and ideological standpoints were expressed as a result of the heatwaves. The results show how the connection between the two phenomena is increasingly reinforced from 2003, through 2018, to 2019. Furthermore, it shows how the discourse is dominated by science and scientists, and the discursive changes strongly correlates to critical discourse moments in the form of new significant scientific studies regarding the heat waves and the causes of them. Climate change is becoming all more present in our daily lives, and the study of climate change and communication is an increasingly relevant topic. With this study I hope to deepen the understanding of how the media talks about climate change in relation to weather events that affect millions of people.
