Framing the 'Other' Populist rhetoric before, during, and after the 2015 Refugee crisis - A comparative analysis of Jimmie Åkesson, Marine Le Pen, and Viktor Orbán

Författare

Summary, in English

In this thesis I analyse multiple statements, speeches, and interviews by Jimmie Åkesson, Marine Le Pen, and Viktor Orbán before, during, and after the refugee crisis in 2015. It examines the leaders' rhetorical process on migration in the context of Islam from 2010 to 2024. Furthermore, the thesis explores the development of the leaders' discourse during one of Europe's most challenging times. The thesis also analyses if the three leaders appeal to similar or different traits of right-wing populism. The populist leaders of right-wing parties have gained notable success across Europe. Jimmie Åkesson, Marine Le Pen, and Viktor Orbán are influential politicians in their respective countries, who have shaped the debate on migration. Previous studies have proved that the success of right-wing populism partially stems from its sentiments on migration. It is, therefore, intriguing to investigate these leaders' rhetorical process and discourse during various periods of the refugee crisis. The thesis is based on the theory of right-wing populism and uses comparative-historical analysis and discourse analysis to conduct the analysis.
