Anti-gender diskurs och Euroskepticism i Ungern. Förklarande idéanalys av Viktor Orbáns retorik
Författare
Summary, in English
This thesis examines how the ruling party in Hungary, Fidesz, under the leadership of Viktor Orbán, uses anti-gender rhetoric as a political tool to amplify eurosceptic opinions in Hungarian society. Through an ideational analysis of six political speeches delivered by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, between 2021 and 2025, the study explores how Orbán constructs and propagates specific reality judgements, value judgements, and prescriptive directives. The findings indicate that the European Union is portrayed as a threat to the Hungarian nation state, with “gender ideology” (Orbán, 2023c) presented as a central element of this perceived threat. The rhetoric establishes a dichotomy between the Hungarian national identity and EU’s liberal values, where Orbán leverages traditional family values to legitimize his political narrative. The results highlight how anti-gender discourse functions as a political tool in Orbán’s illiberal project to mobilize support for a eurosceptic agenda.
