Oh My God, Verkligen? English Code-switching by Swedish speakers online

Författare

Summary, in English

This study investigates code-switching by Swedish English speakers in text-based online discourse. Although many studies have been devoted to CS and some to text-based online discourse, there is a gap in research regarding Swedish English CS in this context. This study fills the gap using comments from Swedish YouTube short-form videos, which were placed into 6 categories based on what the switch was made for, such as to make emphatic interjections, or to make quotes. A total of 3753 comments were collected and examined. The study found that speakers used CS most frequently for making emphatic statements, which was in line with previous studies, and less frequently for any other purpose, such as for clarification. The findings suggested the presence of a possible third influence from the internet-based language, and the analysis showed, above all, that Swedish speakers use English predominantly for emotional expression.
