Sustainable lighting: A bright future for artificially lit outdoor environments?

Welcome to learn more about sustainability issues related to outdoor lighting. Outdoor lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing safety and facilitating mobility during dark hours, yet it also presents several sustainability challenges. Three different perspectives will be given, followed by group discussions.
What is good outdoor lighting? How can we choose better lighting solutions?
Welcome to join this seminar about outdoor lighting and related sustainability issues.
Outdoor lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing safety and facilitating mobility during dark hours, yet it also presents several sustainability challenges. Issues stemming from energy consumption, resource use, waste management, light pollution and ecological sustainability need to be tackled in order to approach a more sustainable outdoor lighting.
The workshop will consist of three themes which will be highlighted through presentations by invited experts:
- Ecological and environmental perspective: The impact of light pollution on animals and ecosystems (Professor Dan E. Nilsson)
- Individual and health perspective: Safety, public health and the role of lighting in public spaces (The Environmental Psychology Research Group)
- Circularity and lighting technology (TBD)
After the presentations there will be thematic discussion groups where the audience is invited to join a theme that sparks their interest, and the seminar will end with a joint discussion.
The event is open to the general public and there is no need for pre-registration.

The Environmental psychology research group conducts research, teaches and collaborates with a focus on the interaction between humans and the environment from the perspective of the individual. Environmental psychology takes a holistic view of the environment and the individual is studied in relation to interiors, urban spaces, landscapes and global environmental conditions.
The event is part of Sustainability Week 2025, which runs between 5-10 May. Sustainability Week is an annual event in Lund organised as a joint venture by Lund University and Lund municipality. The week serves as a platform for bringing together ideas, raising public awareness and for inspiring sustainable change.
