Från protest till prestige: En tematisk analys av svensk gangsterrap och dess förvandling

Författare

Summary, in English

Swedish gangsta rap has emerged in recent years as a dominant force in popular culture, while simultaneously provoking strong reactions in the media, politics, and public discourse. The genre is often accused of glorifying violence, crime, drug use, and a destructive form of masculinity. The aim of this study is to examine how these themes are expressed in contemporary Swedish gangsta rap and how they can be understood in relation to societal responses.
Using a thematic text analysis of five songs, four central themes are identified: violence, drugs, sexualization, and boasting. These are analyzed in relation to previous research on the development of Swedish rap and with the support of Goode & Ben-Yehuda’s theory of moral panic as well as Bourdieu’s theory of culture and symbolic capital. The results show that contemporary gangsta rap often conveys a hypermasculine and violent ideal in which crime and status are central, contributing to the moral panic surrounding the genre.
The study also demonstrates how the moral panic directed at gangsta rap differs from that aimed at earlier forms of Swedish rap, which were primarily criticized for their political content. Today’s reactions are more repressive, more unified, and more closely tied to concerns about gang violence and youth crime. The thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of both the lyrical content and the sociocultural responses it provokes.
