Seminar with Fernando Racimo — "Science in Resistance: the Scientist Rebellion for Climate Justice"
https://www.ucpress.edu/books/science-in-resistance/paper
In the face of climate breakdown and rising authoritarianism, while the
ecological and social crises accelerate and academic freedom comes increasingly
under attack, what is our role as scientists and academics? In this event, Dr.
Fernando Racimo will present his book Science in Resistance, which provides a
first-person account of the Scientist Rebellion, a global movement of scientists
and scholars stepping out of their conventional roles to meet the existential
threat of climate breakdown.
Combining personal stories, interviews with scientist-activists, and insights
from research on direct action and academia, he explores the challenges
scientists face when taking a stand for climate and social justice. The heart of
the book is an exploration of what it means for scientists to leave the comfort
of the ivory tower and step out into the streets: how scientist-activists come
to change themselves even as they attempt to change the world around them.
Racimo will also describe how academic institutions are today complicit in
exploitative and extractive logics, and how they could be transformed from the
bottom-up, to become institutions that foster social and ecological well-being.
The event will also feature a panel Q&A with members of active academic groups
striving for transformation at Lund University.
