Wet Star in the Desert – Julia Karla
Julia Karla’s MFA graduation show Wet Star in the Desert opens at KHM1, Malmö Art Academy on Friday 26th June, 17.00-20.00.
The exhibition explores the relationship between naturality and artificiality. Julia Karla is fascinated by natural processes and cycles - photosynthesis, pollination, precipitation, growth. Informed by these natural systems, Wet Star in the Desert contemplates the links between what humans create and what we are created by.
Moving between scales, from seeds and soil to atmosphere and sun, Wet Star in the Desert considers the interplay between natural and artificial systems. Rather than presenting isolated works, the exhibition unfolds a network of interconnected conditions in which materials, forms and processes continue to echo and affect one another.
The exhibition features installation, sculpture and text-based works, with further site-specific sculptural works around Malmö.
Julia Karla (b. 1996) is a multidisciplinary artist based between Malmö and Copenhagen. Working with a variety of media, her practice explores the relationship between naturality and artificiality. Julia Karla graduates from the Masters programme at Malmö Art Academy in 2026. She previously completed a BFA at Bergen Art Academy where she also studied on exchange at ENSAPC, Paris. She has been awarded grants by The Edstrandska Foundation and William Demant Foundation. Her work has been exhibited in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany with an upcoming exhibition at Skissarnes Museum in Lund in late August 2026.
