December 1981 An analysis of the political positions regarding martial law in Poland 1981 and General Wojciech Jaruzelski

Over 44 years ago, martial law was introduced in Poland as an attempt to defeat those who dared to take a fight against communist regime with demands for a better life and freedom. Demands that were met with reprisals. Tens of people were killed and hundreds were injured as a result of actions taken by regime. Today, the political debate about martial law is divided with various sides taking their own positions.
This paper aims to examine with help of relevant material, sources and methodological tools positions of political parties in Poland regarding the martial law and General Jaruzelski.
The results show a split in positions among the political sides. Left still believes in the fact that martial law was a correct decision, centre-right is divided and therefore it´s hard to precise their exact position, and far-right sees the martial law as a treason.
