Crisis Communication and Community Resilience: Frontline Experiences from Czech Republic's Recent Crises

The interdisciplinary research environment Communication, Defence Willingness, and Democratic Resilience (CDR) develops knowledge and methodologies that enhance citizen participation and resilience in a complex communication landscape. The research focuses on gender and young adult perspectives - areas often overlooked in public debates and academic discussions on defence preparedness.

The Communication, Defence Willingness and Democratic Resilience (CDR) research initiative invites you to a seminar with Jaroslav Valuch from the Crisis Information Team of the Czech Ministry of the Interior, who will provide a practitioner's perspective on crisis communication and resilience building.
Drawing on his direct involvement in recent crisis responses - including the unprecedented mass shooting at Charles University in December 2023, violent community escalations related to Ukrainian refugees, and flood response - Jaroslav will share concrete lessons learned in implementing crisis communication strategies under pressure in a polycrisis environment increasingly affected by hybrid threats.
The presentation will include practical experiences in building community resilience to information disruption, including hands-on work developing and delivering innovative media literacy programmes for senior citizens in Central and Eastern Europe.
Inspired by Sweden's comprehensive approach to strategic communication and societal preparedness, Jaroslav seeks to explore how these well-established concepts and frameworks can be meaningfully adapted and implemented in Central and Eastern Europe, where strategic communication is rapidly but often chaotically introduced across different institutions and sectors.
We hope to see you there!
