a historiographic study of Ingeborg Hammarskjöld-Reiz
How do women architects take part in the historical writing? The Swedish architect Ingeborg Hammarskjöld-Reiz (1909-1994) was one of the first women architects in Sweden and worked in the cities of Lund and Staffanstorp during almost 50 years. She draw more than 3 000 buildings, was engaged socially and in boards, her carrier
was long and successful. The aim of this study is to analyse her position in the writing of architectural history. The theories of gender, historiography, cultural sociology and discourse theory has been used to analyse the material. The author has examined the position of Hammarskjöld-Reiz in three different models of explanation – gender, geography and building types. Three of her building projects, which also take place in the historical writing, have been studied more close, to investigate the type of architecture she worked with. The result of the examination tells that she has a marginal position in the architectural history writing. This is mainly because of the building types and style of architecture she worked with, but also because of a bigger structure where women artists does not get the same place and position in the stories of art and architectural history.
