La zorra promiscua y el zorro astuto - Un estudio sobre construcciones metafóricas de género en palabras de animales

Författare

  • Joanna Steffansson

Summary, in English

This research examines metaphors of animal words in everyday life, with the aim to problematize gender constructions. The study concludes that most of the studied metaphors discriminates and/or subordinate women. In addition, it is concluded that the metaphorical meanings of animal words form part of the linguistic sexism due to the fact that they are verbal mechanisms that recreate and reproduce sexual discrimination. This emerges because the animal words in their female version are primarily used as insult, compared to the male versions which are often used as compliments. The study takes an interdisciplinary perspective combining theories of cognitive linguistics, conceptual metaphors, and the gender perspective in the analysis. The corpus consists of a survey where informants have answered questions about different animal words and their metaphorical meaning. The thesis maintains that the investigates metaphors of animal words transmits ideas of gender and stereotypes of masculinity and femininity.
