El misterio de un asesinato en Cien años de soledad: realismo mágico como discurso postcolonial para desenredar la muerte de José Arcadio
Författare
Summary, in English
This literary analysis is devoted to investigating the mysterious death of José Arcadio in One Hundred Years of Solitude, written by Gabriel García Márquez. The intention is to present a perspective developed by Stephen Slemon in which magical realism is considered in terms of postcolonial discourse, and to apply it to the mentioned episode. Furthermore, the principal objective of the analysis is, on the one hand, to disentangle confusions which have surfaced in previous interpretations, and to examine how this perspective explains the mysteriousness of José Arcadio’s death, on the other. Not only does the chosen perspective provide an explanation as to why contradictions have infected the previous interpretations, the perspective also highlights the reason for why the relevant episode is characterized by an absence of information, which leads to the inference of various possible suspects, the most supported of which, textually, is concluded to be the conservative government.
