Summary, in English
This paper presents the 1936 Spanish general elections as they were seen at the time by the Swedish Envoyé in Madrid and by the Swedish press. While there is plenty of Swedish historical research on Sweden’s role in the Spanish civil war, there are very few studies on the relationships between Sweden and the Spanish Republic before July 1936. Therefore, this study relies almost entirely on two groups of primary sources: the reports sent by the head of the Swedish Legation in Madrid, Ivar Danielsson, to the Swedish Government between December 10, 1935 and March 1, 1936; and the information given at the time on the Spanish elections by Sweden’s main newspapers. The study shows the cautious attitude taken by the diplomat and also by the largest newspapers, and their clear criticism of extremist tendencies and lack of democratic practices present in both right and left wing parties in Spain, which were considered as a serious threat to democracy and peace. The risk of a coup d’etat by the Spanish military was clearly stated on the diplomat’s reports already in December 1935.
