Circularity in the building sector – challenges and opportunities

The construction industry is a major contributor to climate change and consumer of natural resources. Many actors in the industry acknowledge the need to reduce material use, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions. Circularity is one proposed way to reduce the environmental impact of the industry. This event presents and discusses the challenges and opportunities for a more circular building sector through a multidisciplinary perspective, using case studies as inspiration.

Welcome to this two hour event where we through presentations and a panel discussion give insights to the challenges and opportunities for a more circular building sector. 

The event is divided into to parts, the first hour of the event focuses on case studies and the second hour is dedicated to a panel debate which takes inspiration from the case presentations. 

10:00-10:45 Presentations:

Firstly, Karin Farsäter (LTH) and Marcus Utterström (Faculty of Law) will present a case regarding a more traditional development of the built environment through demolition of an existing building, replaced by a new building on the same location. 

Thereafter, Ulla Janson and Riikka Kyrö (LTH) will present cases showing alternative strategies, including repurposing buildings for a new use (“adaptive use”). 

The differences between the cases raise questions on the challenges and possibilities in transitioning to a more circular building industry.

11:00-12:00 Panel debate:

The panel consists of five persons with different perspectives, expertise, and experiences.

  • Otto Ryding (Boverket)
  • Anders Edvardsson (Skanska)
  • Per Olsson (Link Arkitektur)
  • Paul Gontia (International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics)

The debate is moderated by Sönnich Dahl Sönnichsen (School of Economics and Management).
