Classical and Modern features in the poetry of Sweden's first female poet, Sophia Elisabeth Brenner (1659-1730)
Författare
Summary, in English
Sophia Elisabeth Brenner's poems in Swedish, German, Latin, Italian and French made her well-known in Sweden and internationally and she was called 'the tenth muse'. Her collected poems were published in 1713 and posthumously in 1732. The paper explores how Mrs. Brenner made use of classical mythology and history when composing poems in Swedish. Antiquity provided her with a treasure of motives, but she was not an unqualified admirer of the ancients who, she claimed, had been surpassed by contemporary Sweden.
