A correspondence analysis between the English verb become and four selected Spanish verbs

Författare

  • Maximilian Aleman Tennell

Summary, in English

How does the English verb become translate into Spanish? The many ways of
translating the English verb become to Spanish depend on different conditions. In
order to express to become in Spanish it is necessary to address what a certain
thing or person becomes. It is likely that the correspondence between the English
verb become and the four selected Spanish verbs convertirse, hacerse, volverse
and ponerse depends on whether something or someone becomes a noun phrase
(NP) or an adjective phrase (AdjP). Furthermore, there will also be a difference
between the Spanish verbs that take adjectives in terms of how and what the
adjectives mean or indicate. The dependence on certain conditions will
undoubtedly create an imbalance in the frequency of these verbs as some
constructions are more common than others.
