L'œuvre romanesque de Laurent Mauvignier

Författare

  • Harriet Gustafsson

Summary, in English

Presentation of French writer Laurent Mauvignier and his work. He has written eight novels and one play so far: Loin d'eux, Apprendre à finir, Ceux d'à côté, Seuls, Le Lien, Dans la foule, Des hommes, Ce que j'appelle oubli and Tout mon amour (play). An analysis of the character of the narrative in the novels is given. Since the Algerian war (taking place between 1954 and 1962) plays an important role in the novels, a big part of the work is devoted this subject. A summary of the historical facts is presented as well as an identification of the importance of the war in the novels by Laurent Mauvignier. It is first of all the novel from 2009, Des hommes that describes the return of the painful memories so long repressed by the young men who were liable for military service in Algeria at the time. Nevertheless the war seems to be the axe around which the stories are turning in several novels. There is a direct reference to the war in five of of the eight novels and a possible influence in a sixth one. The war has played an important role in the private life of the author too; his father was one of the men called up for Algeria in 1960. Twenty years after the cease-fire the father took his own life, a tragedy on which the traumatic experiences from the war probably have had an impact.
