Författare

Summary, in English

This paper examines the Catalan identity as it is expressed by the president of Catalonia, Assemblea Nacional Catalana and Òmnium Cultural on the Catalan National Day on the 11th of September 2014. These Catalan personalities are striving for an independent Catalonia.
The research is conducted by a narrative method and a visual method in order to be able to interpret the cultural expressions and symbolic actions.
The research points to the importance of narrative between history and future. This paper shows that the use of historical memory is fundamental in order to understand the striving for independence. The use of symbols and symbolic actions is also considered a manifest of the Catalan identity – the heavy use of the Catalan flag, La Senyera, is a great example hereof. This paper also touches upon the fact that many Catalans cherish and promote the use of the Catalan language.
By declaring Catalonia a nation, democracy and self-determination are considered as fundamental components and rights, which the Catalans demand for their future. The long battle for independence has shaped the Catalan identity.
