Summary, in English

This is a Bachelor’s thesis on the subject of EU foreign relations with the Andean Community and its most recent political development. The thesis seeks to describe the political ideas behind the European Union’s foreign policy and external relations with the Andean Community, such as they are stated in the Regional Strategy Paper (2007-2013) and the Political Dialogue & Cooperation Agreement (2003). The thesis further studies and discusses, within the context of new regionalism and with a combination of actor-centred idea analysis and foreign policy analysis, whether the political ideas correspond to actual political developments by putting them in the light of the European Union’s visa agreements from 2015 and 2016 with Colombia and Peru.

We live in an era where globalisation, regionalization and regionalism are shaping the world and its international system and where politics and power have become more and more fluid and transportable between authorities and societal levels. An era where previous time’s political foundations and ideas about world order, sovereign states and closed economies are starting to fade and truly become a part of the past.

Within this context and on today’s global political arena, where the European Union has grown into a true power-player within the area of trade and development, it is of great importance and relevance to study its foreign policy and external relations with a region like the Andean Community, home to two of the world’s fastest growing economies: Peru and Colombia.
